In April 1815, Mount Tambora on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa erupted in what is considered the most powerful volcanic explosion in recorded history. The eruption killed tens of thousands of people on the island and in the surrounding region, either directly or through the famine and disease that followed. Its effects, however, were felt far beyond Indonesia. The volcano threw enormous quantities of ash and sulphur gases high into the atmosphere, where they spread around the globe and formed a thin layer that reflected part of the sun's energy back into space. As a result, average global temperatures fell by about half a degree Celsius over the following year. This may not sound like much, but it was enough to disrupt weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere. In 1816, which became known in Europe and North America as "the year without a summer", snow fell in New England in June, and heavy rains destroyed crops in many parts of Europe. Food prices rose sharply, and in some regions there were riots as hungry people demanded bread. The cold, gloomy weather also had unexpected cultural consequences. Kept indoors by constant rain during a holiday in Switzerland, the young writer Mary Shelley began writing the novel that would become Frankenstein. Today, scientists study the Tambora eruption not only as a historical event but also as a natural experiment that shows how sensitive the global climate is to sudden changes in the atmosphere.

The author mentions Mary Shelley in order to ----.

  1. A) argue that writers should spend their holidays in Switzerland
  2. B) give an example of an unexpected cultural effect of the eruption
  3. C) show that the eruption killed many people in Switzerland
  4. D) explain how scientists study volcanic eruptions today
  5. E) prove that the cold weather caused riots in many parts of Europe
Cevabı ve çözümü göster

Doğru cevap: B) give an example of an unexpected cultural effect of the eruption

Yazar Mary Shelley'den, "The cold, gloomy weather also had unexpected cultural consequences" (soğuk, kasvetli havanın beklenmedik kültürel sonuçları da oldu) cümlesinin hemen ardından söz eder: sürekli yağmur yüzünden içeride kalan Shelley Frankenstein'ı yazmaya başlamıştır.

For much of the twentieth century, psychologists assumed that intelligence was largely fixed at birth and that little could be done to change it. This view began to be challenged in the 1980s, when researchers noticed that average scores on IQ tests had been rising steadily in many countries for several decades. The phenomenon, later named the Flynn effect after the New Zealand researcher who documented it most thoroughly, amounted to a gain of about three points per decade. Such a rapid change could hardly be explained by genetics, since the genetic makeup of a population does not alter significantly over a few generations. Instead, scholars pointed to environmental factors: better nutrition, smaller families, longer schooling and a daily life that increasingly demanded abstract thinking. Interestingly, the gains were not spread evenly across all types of test. They were largest on tasks that required people to identify patterns and classify objects, and much smaller on tests of vocabulary or general knowledge. More recently, some studies in Scandinavian countries have reported that the trend has stalled or even reversed since the 1990s. Researchers are still debating the causes of this reversal, but most agree that it, too, must be environmental. Taken together, these findings suggest that intelligence, at least as measured by standard tests, is far more sensitive to the conditions in which people live than earlier generations of psychologists believed.

According to the passage, the rise in IQ scores could not be explained by genetics because ----.

  1. A) psychologists had long believed that intelligence was fixed at birth
  2. B) the increase was too small to be measured reliably by standard tests
  3. C) researchers in Scandinavia showed that the increase had stopped in the 1990s
  4. D) a population's genes do not change much within just a few generations
  5. E) the gains were found mainly on tests of vocabulary and general knowledge
Cevabı ve çözümü göster

Doğru cevap: D) a population's genes do not change much within just a few generations

Metin artışın genetikle açıklanamayacağını söyler, çünkü "the genetic makeup of a population does not alter significantly over a few generations" (bir nüfusun genetik yapısı birkaç kuşakta önemli ölçüde değişmez).

İpucu: "could hardly be explained by genetics, since …" cümlesindeki "since" sonrası doğrudan cevaptır.

Strateji: "According to the passage … because" sorularında metinde "since, because, as" ile verilen gerekçeyi bul; seçenekte yeniden ifade edilmiş hâlini ara.
