YDS burada özellikle yapı dönüşümlerini ölçer: unless → if ... not, so ... that → because, not so much X as Y → less X than Y, few ... survive → most ... fail gibi.

  1. Verilen cümleyi Türkçe tek cümleyle özetle: kim, ne, hangi ilişkiyle?
  2. Üç şeyi not et: ilişki (neden, zıtlık, koşul), kesinlik derecesi (may, likely, always, only) ve zaman (since, before, had).
  3. Şıklarda bu üç şeyden birini değiştireni ele.
  4. Kalan şıkta yapı farklı olabilir; anlam aynıysa doğru cevaptır.

  5. E) Before printing was invented in the fifteenth century, books in Europe were too expensive for most ordinary people to afford.
Cevabı ve çözümü göster

Doğru cevap: E) Before printing was invented in the fifteenth century, books in Europe were too expensive for most ordinary people to afford.

"It was not until X that Y" yapısı Y'nin ancak X'ten sonra gerçekleştiğini anlatır: kitaplar sıradan insanların alabileceği kadar ucuzlaması ancak matbaanın icadıyla oldu; yani öncesinde kitaplar çoğu insan için çok pahalıydı. Doğru seçenek bunu "Before printing was invented …, books … were too expensive" diye aynı anlamla verir.

İpucu: "It was not until X that Y" = Y ancak X'ten sonra oldu; X'ten önce Y yoktu.

Strateji: "It was not until … that" cümlesini "Before …, … not …" biçiminde yeniden yazabilirsin; seçeneklerde bu dönüşümü ara.

Örnek soru 2

Although antibiotics are extremely effective against bacterial infections, they are of no use against viruses, which is why doctors do not prescribe them for the common cold.

  1. A) Doctors do not give antibiotics for the common cold because, however effective these drugs are against bacteria, they cannot be used to treat viral infections.
  2. B) Doctors rarely prescribe antibiotics for the common cold, as these drugs are much less effective against bacterial infections than they used to be in the past.
  3. C) Antibiotics are effective against both viruses and bacteria, but doctors prefer not to prescribe them for minor illnesses such as the common cold.
  4. D) Since the common cold is caused by bacteria, doctors usually prescribe antibiotics, which are extremely effective against most kinds of infection.
  5. E) Because viruses have become resistant to antibiotics, doctors have recently stopped prescribing these drugs for illnesses such as the common cold.
Cevabı ve çözümü göster

Doğru cevap: A) Doctors do not give antibiotics for the common cold because, however effective these drugs are against bacteria, they cannot be used to treat viral infections.

Doğru seçenek bu bilgileri "however effective … against bacteria, they cannot be used to treat viral infections" diyerek farklı bir yapıyla korur.

Üçüncü tip koşul (Had … not), "not so much X as Y", "few / hardly any", "however + sıfat" ve "it was not until … that" gibi yapılar.
